Work-Life Imbalance

January 4, 2021

Part 1 of My Triumphs and Failures of 2020

My biggest failure this year is focusing so much on what I was working on that I neglected and failed to maintain important relationships with my friends and family.

One sad example of this imbalance is when I’d get calls/alerts at 2am, and would answer them while in bed! My wife is a saint for putting up with that.

This youtube video was a great kick in the pants on this as well as my friends/family helping me to see my imbalance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snAhsXyO3Ck

Basically, the idea is to map out specific spaces for specific reasons. Say goodbye to answering alerts/calls in the bedroom. If there is an emergency, I take them to my office before answering.

In addition to just building a better process, it’s important to carve time for yourself and friends. I’ve been blocking specific parts of each day for exercise, friends and family, and learning. Support networkers are no joke. We are social animals!

Example of what I mean:

6-10am learning, 10-11:30 exercise, 12-12:30 cooking together, 1-2pm zoom hangouts with friends (covid!!) and hanging with my wife, etc.

“Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart” – Elenor Roosevelt.

Friendships take years to build, and a fraction of that to fail if they are not maintained. Similar to your mental well being, work-life balance is hard to achieve when you’re going from 0-1 on a project. But taking care of yourself and those you love is even harder, and is bigger and more important than anything. Your priority should be clear, and then make decisions accordingly.

I’m challenging myself and everyone reading this to take more time for themselves, and for the people that are important to them this year.

What are your strategies for making time for yourself and your friends/family? Let’s start 2021 out right.
